Social media in Uzbekistan circulated claims that a new 500,000 som banknote featuring Mirzo Ulugbek had been issued.
The Central Bank of Uzbekistan has denied these reports, stating they are false.
“Currently, the issue of introducing a new banknote is not being considered by the Central Bank of the Republic of Uzbekistan,” the regulator said in a statement.
According to Article 39 of the Law “On the Central Bank”, the denomination of banknotes is set by the regulator. Article 40 grants the Central Bank the exclusive right to issue banknotes and coins.
After approval by the Senate, the Central Bank publishes a description of the new banknote and information about its introduction in the media.
