According to the National Statistics Committee, the permanent population of Uzbekistan stood at nearly 38.4 million as of April 1, 2026.
The agency released a ranking of the most populous settlements. The city of Namangan remains the leader with 731,300 residents. Samarkand ranks second with 607,600, followed by Urgut district in Samarkand region with 588,600.
The top ten also includes: Andijan (506,000), Denov district in Surkhandarya region (442,700), three districts of Tashkent – Almazar (419,600), Yunusabad (395,000) and Shaykhontohur (374,600), as well as Pastdargom district in Samarkand region (401,500) and Asaka district in Andijan region (369,600).
Analysts note that the concentration of population in major cities and districts puts additional strain on infrastructure, employment and social services. This trend could exacerbate regional disparities in the long term.
