Uzbekistan is grappling with severe difficulties in obtaining Schengen visas for travel to France. Blogger Nikita Makarenko revealed that booking an appointment at the TLScontact visa center is nearly impossible, while intermediaries are selling slots for $150-$500. Following his exposé, the French authorities revoked his visa.
Makarenko also claimed that the center prohibited him from using his phone—even for calls and internet—citing French directives. He argued that French instructions cannot override Uzbek law and urged anti-corruption and consumer protection agencies to investigate TLScontact's practices.
After a series of publications and complaints, the French Embassy stated it “prioritizes applicant service” and will crack down on profiteering from visa procedures. In response, TLScontact will introduce a new booking system for short-term Schengen visas starting July 1: applicants will no longer be able to choose their appointment date; it will be assigned automatically. Other visa types remain unaffected.
The new system aims to curb intermediaries and fraudsters.
