Tashkent, Uzbekistan – Podrobno.uz. Three citizens of Uzbekistan, previously sentenced to death in Malaysia on drug trafficking charges, have had their sentences commuted to 30 years in prison. They are currently serving their sentences in correctional facilities.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan, the case dates back to 2010 at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, where the three Uzbek nationals were arrested with over 12 kilograms of narcotic substances in their luggage. A Malaysian court later sentenced them to death.
Over the following years, the Uzbek embassy in Malaysia repeatedly sent appeals for clemency to various state authorities in 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2020.
In 2018, Malaysia imposed a moratorium on executions. After the enactment of a law reviewing cases of those sentenced to death and life imprisonment, the country's Supreme Court reviewed the verdict.
As a result, the death penalty was replaced with 30 years of imprisonment. Considering the order of sentence execution and possible reductions for good behavior, the prison term could end in 2030.
