Tashkent is considering the construction of a 100-kilometer double-decker toll ring road worth $1 billion, according to a decision by the Tashkent City Council of People's Deputies on July 22, dedicated to the state of construction, reconstruction, and maintenance of the capital's highways.
The document states that agreements have been reached with international financial institutions and major road construction companies to implement several large infrastructure projects. The city administration clarified to Gazeta that these are not firm deals but signed memorandums of understanding.
In particular, a 100-kilometer double-decker toll ring road around Tashkent is planned in cooperation with China Railway Construction. The preliminary cost of the project is $1 billion. Other details of the project have not been disclosed.
A memorandum was also signed with China's SINO-Hunan company for another $1 billion project. It includes the construction of 7 tunnels and 5 overpasses, the creation of 57 kilometers of bus rapid transit (BRT) corridors on 16 streets, as well as the construction and reconstruction of 279 kilometers of roads.
China Construction may invest $500 million in building 3 overpasses and 4 camping areas, as well as major repairs of 27 kilometers of roads. Discussions with Shanghai Construction involve building a camping center and repairing 7.7 kilometers of roads for $100 million.
Additionally, preliminary agreements have been reached with Xinjiang Hui'er Agricultural on landscaping roadside areas based on landscape design projects.
In May, the Tashkent city administration announced it was discussing the construction of a toll ring road about 100 kilometers long with China Railway Construction Corporation. The sides also considered a project to build a toll highway from the city center to the future 'New Tashkent' international airport.
During a meeting between a delegation led by Mayor Shavkat Umurzakov and the leadership of the Chinese corporation, issues of comprehensive city renovation, infrastructure modernization, and the company's potential participation in building social facilities and a construction and household waste processing plant were discussed.
