A court in Termez, Uzbekistan, has sentenced a woman convicted of human trafficking, as reported by UzNews.uz correspondent citing the court ruling. According to case materials, the 30-year-old resident of Angor district, facing severe financial hardship after a divorce, agreed to sell her son, born in 2014, for 40 million soums (approximately $4,000).

She was arrested while receiving the first half of the payment. During the trial, the defendant fully admitted her guilt, stating that she was driven to the crime by dire financial circumstances, lack of housing, and numerous debts. She claimed she hoped the child would live in better conditions.

It was also revealed that in February of this year, the woman gave birth to a daughter and voluntarily gave her to a childless family. The court found her guilty under Article 135, Part 3, Clause 'b' of the Criminal Code of Uzbekistan (Human Trafficking) and sentenced her to 3 years and 6 months of imprisonment in a general-regime correctional colony.

Additionally, the court instructed the Angor district branch of the National Social Protection Agency 'Inson' and the child protection department under the Angor district administration to resolve the issue of guardianship over the minor boy, who remained in the care of a relative after his mother's arrest.
