In January, two BMW cars in Tashkent refused to stop when ordered by traffic police. Video of the incident went viral online. One participant, Asadbek Jumayev, an employee at Uzbelas Performance car service, gave an interview about the case.
Jumayev told blogger Malik Mukhamedov: "Someone could get 15 days for this, but we got off with a minor fine—10 BRV (4.12 million soum)." He hinted at having numerous connections by quoting the saying "Don't have a hundred rubles, have a hundred friends," and stated he was proud of his actions.
After the interview spread, public activists criticized authorities for the lack of punishment certainty. Only on February 25, a month and a half after the incident, did traffic police impound the BMW at a penalty lot.
On February 25, another BMW M4 hit a traffic police officer. The driver was a 16-year-old minor without a license. Jumayev denied involvement but confirmed acquaintance with the suspect.
According to Tashkent traffic police, enhanced raids on February 27 uncovered multiple cases of driving without licenses in the city.
