Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of Spain's main opposition People's Party, has called for former King Juan Carlos to return from self-imposed exile, citing his role in the country's transition to democracy nearly 50 years ago.

Juan Carlos ascended the throne in 1975 after dictator Francisco Franco's death and was instrumental in steering Spain toward parliamentary democracy. His actions during a 1981 coup attempt by pro-Franco forces solidified his popularity for decades.

However, he abdicated in 2014 following scandals, including an elephant hunting trip in Botswana during an economic crisis and a $100 million payment from the late Saudi king. He moved to the UAE in 2020.

The government's declassification of around 150 documents related to the 1981 coup attempt has renewed focus on Juan Carlos's actions, prompting Feijóo's call for his return.

Justice Minister Félix Bolaños stated the decision rests solely with the former king and the Royal Household. Analysts note that his return would require resolving financial and personal matters, including his relationship with his son, King Felipe.
