The historic mosaic panels adorning the walls of the old terminal at Andijan International Airport will be preserved after the building is demolished and relocated to the new air terminal. The panels are planned to be displayed in a small museum to be established within the new terminal.
This was announced to journalists by the airport director, Sohibjon Kenjayev. Earlier reports indicated that the old terminal, built in 1979, is slated for demolition once construction of the new terminal is completed. The building no longer meets safety requirements following the expansion of the runway.
Despite the demolition, the airport authorities decided to retain the historical elements of the terminal. Specialists plan to dismantle the mosaic panels in their entirety to avoid damaging the compositions during relocation. Initially, they intend to incorporate the panels into the exhibition of a small museum dedicated to the airport's history.
The exact location for the museum has not yet been determined, as construction of the new terminal is ongoing and its interior layout is still being finalized. A final decision will be made after the design work is completed. Currently, specialists are preparing for the dismantling of the mosaics, with work being carried out in cooperation with the Agency for Cultural Heritage.
Initially, options to preserve part of the old building or convert it entirely into a museum were considered. However, these ideas were abandoned. According to Kenjayev, the old terminal would not fit the architectural style of the new modern complex.
After the demolition, the site will be used to construct an administrative building for airport staff and a barracks for military personnel responsible for guarding the facility. The mosaic panels do not yet have official protected status and are not included in the state register of cultural heritage objects. According to the airport director, the issue of including them in the register may be considered after they are relocated to the new terminal.
