President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, during a working trip to the Khorezm region, announced the start of preparatory work on the project to build a second nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan. The head of state made this statement at a meeting with local residents and officials.
According to the president, reliable energy supply and reducing the cost of electricity are necessary to attract foreign investment and implement the country's development strategy until 2030. These factors are crucial for stimulating economic growth and improving the living standards of the population.
The parameters of the future nuclear power plant have not yet been disclosed. It is also unknown where it will be located, what capacity the station will have, and in what timeframe it is planned to be built. Experts suggest that these issues will be clarified in subsequent stages.
The country's first nuclear project is currently being implemented in the Farish district of the Jizzakh region. On June 4, the presidents of Uzbekistan and Russia, Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Vladimir Putin, launched the construction of the first power unit of an integrated nuclear power plant via videoconference. The 'first concrete' was poured into the foundation of the future station at the site.
The project includes two VVER-1000 power units and two RITM-200N reactors. Once the station reaches full capacity, it is expected to generate about 15.4 billion kWh of electricity per year, which will cover more than 15% of the country's needs. This will be an important step towards strengthening energy independence and sustainable economic development.
