Seattle Mayor Kati B. Wilson has officially declared September 1, 2026, as 'Uzbekistan Independence Day' in the city. The proclamation is timed to coincide with the 35th anniversary of Uzbekistan's independence.
This was reported to Podrobno.uz by Akhror Bakhromov, the first Consul General of Uzbekistan in Seattle. According to him, the mayor's decision is not only a symbolic gesture but also a testament to the developing relations between Uzbekistan and the city.
'We especially value that a city with such global economic, technological, and cultural influence officially celebrates the 35th anniversary of Uzbekistan's independence and recognizes the contribution of the Uzbek community to Seattle's development and diversity,' Bakhromov said.
The proclamation highlights Uzbekistan's 35-year journey as an independent state and its role in Central Asia. The document specifically mentions the activities of the Consulate General of Uzbekistan in Seattle.
According to the diplomat, Seattle and Tashkent have been sister cities for over half a century. The opening of the first Consulate General of Uzbekistan in Washington state, in his assessment, gives these ties new substance.
'Our task now is to turn the historical friendship into concrete projects in trade, investment, technology, education, and cultural exchange,' Bakhromov noted.
He added that he perceives the proclamation as a sign of respect for the people of Uzbekistan and a confirmation of new opportunities for cooperation between the country and the American Northwest.
The official opening of the Consulate General of Uzbekistan in Seattle is scheduled for September 4. It is expected to be attended by representatives of Washington state and city authorities, the diplomatic corps, American companies, academic circles, and the public.
Earlier, at a meeting between President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and a delegation of the U.S. House of Representatives, the expansion of direct ties and joint projects with the American states of Missouri, North Carolina, Texas, and Hawaii was discussed. The parties also reviewed the implementation of a three-year economic cooperation program and agreed to organize mutual visits of business missions.
