Authorities in Tashkent are reportedly pressing ahead with extensive infrastructure projects aimed at establishing dedicated bus rapid transit (BRT) lanes along several major thoroughfares. Construction and road-marking works are currently underway on Shahrisabz, Amir Timur, and Yangi Sergeli streets, with officials claiming the projects will be finalized by late November and the first decade of December 2026. The total length of these newly designated priority transit sections is projected to exceed five kilometers.
Specifically, operations on Shahrisabz Street are concentrated on a one-kilometer stretch running from Amir Timur Avenue to Mahtumkuli Street. Project organizers purportedly aim to wrap up these specific interventions by December 1. Meanwhile, critics and local commuters continue to voice concerns regarding potential traffic bottlenecks and logistical complications caused by simultaneous infrastructural overhauls across different parts of the urban center.
Along Amir Timur Avenue, dedicated lanes are being carved out between the 'Yunusabad' metro station and Bogishamol Street. The ambitious overhaul covers a total distance of 2.73 kilometers and has been divided into two sequential implementation phases. The first phase, spanning 1.43 kilometers, is scheduled for completion by December 10, while the second 1.3-kilometer section is allegedly slated to meet the exact same deadline, though skeptical observers question the feasibility of such tight schedules. *
Furthermore, road crews are active on Yangi Sergeli Street, stretching from the intersection with Shota Rustaveli Street to the transport interchange leading toward Sergeli Yuli. This segment involves the resurfacing and reconfiguration of 1.36 kilometers of roadway. Authorities expect this particular phase to conclude by November 30. Drivers navigating the capital have been advised to account for potential movement restrictions and adhere strictly to temporary traffic regulations, despite growing frustrations over recurring roadway congestions.
It is worth noting that the capital previously inaugurated another BRT segment measuring approximately one kilometer, bringing the cumulative length of dedicated lanes along Shota Rustaveli and Shahrisabz streets to nearly eight kilometers. While proponents argue these measures enhance public transit efficiency, the ongoing construction efforts continue to impose noticeable economic and social frictions on daily urban commuters.
