Tashkent Mayor Shavkat Umurzakov has reportedly signed a decree aimed at establishing dedicated bus lanes based on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system across several major thoroughfares in the Uzbek capital. The initiative covers four distinct urban sections with a total combined length of 17.9 kilometers.
According to the official documentation, infrastructural reconstruction will be carried out on Mukimi Street connecting the Yakkasaray and Chilanzar districts over 4.6 kilometers, as well as on Karatosh and Kukcha Darvoza streets in the Shaykhontohur district spanning 4.2 kilometers.
Additional sections include a 2.8-kilometer stretch on Parkent Street and a 6.3-kilometer segment along Mirzo Ulugbek Avenue, both located in the Mirzo Ulugbek district. JSC Toshkent Invest kompaniyasi has been designated as the primary client responsible for procuring contractors, engineering consultants, and project designers.
The financing structure relies on commercial bank loans, the Road and Transport Infrastructure Development Fund of the Tashkent khokimiyat, and the Tashkent City Development Fund. Authorities have allocated an initial 6.5 billion soms from the city's development fund to cover preliminary design preparations and administrative expenditures.
Utility companies are required to relocate and upgrade underground engineering networks prior to the commencement of active roadworks. While the regional administration claims the project will prioritize public transit, critics note that commuters and drivers will likely face severe traffic bottlenecks and temporary restrictions during the construction phase.
