American actor Nicholas Brendon, renowned for his role as Xander Harris in the cult TV series 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer', has died at the age of 54. His family confirmed in a statement on social media that "he passed in his sleep of natural causes". Family members highlighted his lifelong dedication to art, stating, "He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was".
Brendon played Xander Harris over seven seasons from 1997 to 2003, serving as the best friend to the titular character portrayed by Sarah Michelle Gellar. Plans for a reboot of the series were cancelled, as Gellar announced to fans on Instagram earlier this month. Following news of her co-star's death, Gellar quoted a famous monologue by his character, writing, "I saw you Nicky. I know you are at peace, in that big rocking chair in the sky".
The Los Angeles-born actor received three Saturn Award nominations for his role in 'Buffy', including two for Best Actor on Television and one for Best Supporting Actor on Television. His twin brother, Kelly Donovan Schultz, also served as his body double in two episodes of the series. Brendon also collaborated with co-stars such as Alyson Hannigan, who paid tribute in an Instagram post.
The actor was open about his health struggles, including a heart attack and two spinal surgeries for cauda equina syndrome, as well as a stutter, advocating as a spokesperson for the Stuttering Foundation of America. He also acknowledged battles with substance addiction, alcoholism, and mental health issues. In an interview with Hollywood Reporter, his family noted that while Brendon had past difficulties, he was on medication and treatment at the time of his passing and was optimistic about the future.
