The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Thursday that it will reintroduce genetic gender testing to determine eligibility for female events, starting with the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. This decision will allow only biological female athletes to compete in female category events, with their gender to be determined through a one-time gene-screening test.
The IOC announced this policy as part of its initiative to introduce a universal rule for competitors in female elite sports, after years of fragmented regulations that sparked several controversies. The committee emphasized that the rule applies to elite Olympic events but not to recreational or grassroots sports.
The new rule is also in line with an executive order issued by US President Donald Trump on transgender women in sports. While this move aims to address equality and fairness issues in women's sports, its practical implications and consequences continue to be debated, as the testing could impact athletes' personal lives.
