Eurovision, the world's longest-running international music competition, is expanding into Asia for the first time. The Asia edition will kick off with a grand final in Bangkok on November 14, 2024. Ten countries, including South Korea, Thailand, and the Philippines, have confirmed participation, with more expected to join the list.
Eurovision director Martin Green stated that the expansion into Asia is "especially meaningful" for the contest's 70th anniversary, citing a "region rich in culture, creativity and talent." However, the success of the Asia edition remains uncertain, as the American Song Contest in 2022 was not renewed due to poor viewership, highlighting challenges in replicating Eurovision's format globally.
While Asia boasts vibrant music scenes like K-pop, T-Wind, and Bollywood, major markets such as India and Japan have yet to confirm involvement. Rules typically require original songs and live vocals, but specifics for the Asia version are unclear. The event's website promises that "every vote will count" and it will be "a celebration of original pop music."
Eurovision attracted 163 million viewers last year, but it has also become a focal point for political tensions, with Russia banned since 2022 and several countries boycotting this year's contest over Israel's participation. The Asia edition aims to avoid such controversies, focusing on cultural exchange.
Chuwit Sirivajjakul, a senior official at the Thailand Tourism Authority, endorsed Bangkok as the host city, calling it a place "where cultures come together." The contest is organized by the European Broadcasting Union in partnership with Los Angeles-based Voxovation and Thailand's S2O Productions.
