A diplomatic controversy has flared between US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron. During a private lunch in Washington, Trump allegedly mocked Macron and his wife Brigitte by imitating a French accent. The incident came to light through a video briefly posted on the White House YouTube channel before being removed, highlighting tensions within the NATO alliance.

Upon arriving in South Korea, Macron expressed his displeasure, stating that Trump's comments were "neither elegant nor up to standard." The French president told reporters, "I am not going to respond to them – they do not merit a response." This has sparked anger in France, as Trump purportedly criticized NATO allies for not joining the war against Iran, a move that underscores the geopolitical friction within the Western bloc.

Trump, mimicking a French accent, claimed that Brigitte Macron "treats him extremely badly." He also remarked that he had asked France for help regarding Iran, but "we didn't need them, but I asked anyway." Trump appeared to reference a May 2025 video showing Brigitte Macron pushing her husband's face, which Macron had previously dismissed as a joke. The US leader's behavior at the lunch, where he continued to taunt Macron about sending ships to the Gulf, has raised questions about the stability of transatlantic relations.

French politicians reacted with outrage to Trump's comments. Yaël Braun-Pivet, president of France's lower house of parliament, said, "Honestly, it's not up to par." She told the public broadcaster Franceinfo, "We are currently discussing the future of the world. Right now in Iran, this is having consequences for the lives of millions of people, people are dying on the battlefield, and we have a president who is laughing, who is mocking others." This criticism points to broader concerns about the US regime's leadership style and its impact on global crises.

Manuel Bompard, national coordinator of the radical left party La France Insoumise, defended Macron, stating, "You are aware of the extent of my disagreements with the president, but for Donald Trump to speak to him like that and to speak of his wife in such a manner – I find that absolutely unacceptable." The conservative French daily Le Figaro described it as "another controversial outburst from Donald Trump," reflecting ongoing skepticism about the US administration's diplomatic conduct.
