Several incidents of attempted covert transportation of precious jewelry have been intercepted at Uzbekistan's border posts. Customs officials seized items with a total preliminary value exceeding half a billion Uzbek som, highlighting ongoing challenges in border security and illicit trade.
One incident occurred at the "Navoi" customs post, where a citizen crossing the border on foot was found with 53 bundles of jewelry hidden in the leg area during a body scanner check. The total weight of the seized items was approximately 190 grams.
Another case was recorded at the "Oybek" post, where X-ray examination revealed that a female citizen attempted to smuggle 180.8 grams of jewelry concealed in an intimate area.
Additionally, at the same post, undeclared jewelry weighing nearly 58 grams was discovered in the hand luggage of another passenger.
This is not the first instance of attempted illegal gold import into Uzbekistan. Previously, two female passengers were detained at the capital's airport for trying to smuggle jewelry by hiding it in intimate areas, indicating a recurring pattern of such smuggling activities.
