Turkish police have arrested 162 people accused of posting controversial content online about two deadly school shootings that occurred this week. Authorities stated that those detained were "found to have engaged in posts and activities praising crime and criminals and negatively affecting public order."

The first attack took place on Tuesday at a high school in the country's southeast, injuring at least 16 people. The second incident occurred on Wednesday at a school in the city of Kahramanmaras, killing nine individuals, including eight students and one teacher, with 13 others wounded, six in critical condition. A 14-year-old attacker was also killed during the event.

Funerals for the victims were held on Thursday near the city's main mosque, where hundreds gathered. The uncle of 10-year-old Zeynep, Mahmut, told the BBC she was a clever girl who respected others: "Now she is an angel, she flew away." Another bereaved relative at the funerals called for increased protection in schools following the attack.

The local prosecutor's office indicated the attack was premeditated, with a document dated April 11, 2026, found on the suspect's computer stating his intent to carry out a major operation in the near future. Police reported that the suspect referenced U.S. mass killer Elliot Rodger in a photo on his WhatsApp profile.

Justice Minister Akın Gürlek announced that 95 individuals were arrested due to government concerns over online behavior after the attacks. They face accusations of sharing footage related to the attack despite a broadcast ban, posting content that could create fear, praising crime and encouraging offences, and circulating misinformation. Restrictions have also been imposed on 1,104 social media accounts, with another 67 people taken into custody for sharing posts suggesting attacks would be carried out at other schools.
