Technology tycoons Elon Musk and Sam Altman are set for a high-stakes trial beginning Monday, centering on alleged betrayal and deceit that shattered their shared vision for artificial intelligence development.

The trial focuses on OpenAI's 2015 founding as a nonprofit startup primarily funded by Musk, which later evolved into a capitalist venture now valued at $852 billion. Musk's lawsuit, filed in August 2024, accuses Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman of double-crossing him by secretly shifting OpenAI into a profit-making mode.

A key piece of evidence is Brockman's diary entry from autumn 2017: "This is the only chance we have to get out from Elon. Is he the 'glorious leader' that I would pick?" The case includes thousands of pages of internal documents.

Musk demands OpenAI revert to nonprofit status and that Altman and Brockman be removed from their positions. OpenAI dismisses the allegations as sour grapes, claiming Musk aims to undermine its growth and promote his own AI startup, xAI.

The trial also poses risks for Musk, who was recently found liable for fraud in his Twitter takeover. SpaceX's planned IPO could make him the world's first trillionaire, but damaging revelations could hurt those prospects.
