The White House has reportedly not ruled out Iran's proposal to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the US lifting its blockade, but US officials insist any agreement must include a nuclear deal.
US President Donald Trump has allegedly expressed doubts about Tehran's sincerity regarding the latest proposal, though he did not outright reject it. The plan would postpone discussions on Iran's nuclear program.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Fox News: "We can't let them get away with it. Any agreement must definitively prevent them from sprinting towards a nuclear weapon at any point."
Washington demands Iran hand over highly enriched uranium and abandon any pursuit of nuclear weapons. Tehran denies seeking a bomb but insists on its right to a civilian nuclear program, including uranium enrichment.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, on a diplomatic tour, blamed Washington for failed talks due to "excessive demands." He is currently in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
UN chief Antonio Guterres warned of rising humanitarian toll, while dozens of countries called for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticized the US for lacking a clear strategy and allegedly being "humiliated" by Iran.
