US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation on April 29. According to Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, Putin informed Trump of his readiness to declare a ceasefire on May 9.
“Trump actively supported this initiative,” Ushakov added. He noted that Trump told Putin that an agreement to resolve the conflict in Ukraine was very close.
The call was initiated by Moscow and lasted over an hour and a half. Commenting on the conversation, Trump said they discussed a possible ceasefire in Ukraine.
“We had a good conversation, I’ve known him for a long time,” the US president told reporters in the Oval Office. The White House leader also claimed that he himself proposed a “short-term ceasefire” in the war in Ukraine.
“I think he can do it,” Trump added, asking reporters whether Putin had declared a ceasefire. The US president also revealed that Putin offered to help resolve the issue of enriched uranium in Iran.
“I said I would rather you help stop the war with Ukraine,” Trump stated.
