US President Donald Trump has informed Congress that hostilities with Iran have ended, citing a ceasefire in place since April 7, 2026. In a letter to congressional leaders, Trump stated that no exchange of fire has occurred since that date.

The declaration came on the 60th day after Trump formally notified Congress of strikes against Iran, which began on February 28, 2026. Under the War Powers Resolution, the president must terminate any use of US armed forces within 60 days of such notification unless Congress authorizes an extension.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth argued before a congressional hearing that the ceasefire effectively pauses the 60-day clock. However, Democratic Senator Tim Kaine challenged this interpretation, stating, "I do not believe the statute would support that."

The administration's stance has reignited debate over presidential war powers. Critics contend that the Trump regime acted without proper congressional approval in the conflict with Iran, raising constitutional concerns.

The situation remains fluid, with legal experts divided on whether the ceasefire legally resets the timeline. Congress may face pressure to formally address the issue, potentially leading to a vote on authorization of military force.
