US President Donald Trump has ordered the military to begin Operation 'Project Freedom' in the Strait of Hormuz, transitioning to forceful action to break the Iranian blockade. Trump announced the mission on his Truth Social platform, calling it a 'humanitarian gesture'.

The operation aims to evacuate hundreds of foreign vessels trapped in the strait since February 2026 due to the ongoing war between the US, Israel, and Iran. Trump claimed that hundreds of crew members and thousands of tons of cargo have become 'innocent hostages'.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the deployment of destroyers, over 100 aircraft, and 15,000 troops to the area. CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper stated that the military is prepared to give a 'decisive response' to any attempt to hinder the evacuation.

According to Axios, citing White House sources, the decision follows a serious split within Trump's inner circle. The president rejected diplomatic advice to continue talks but also refused the 'hawks' plan for a full-scale war, opting instead for a third option: a forceful de-blockade.

US intelligence warns of high risks: Iran may use naval mines or attack convoys with fast boats, which could lead to further escalation. The strait is a critical chokepoint for global oil, with about one-fifth of the world's petroleum passing through it.

Since February 2026, shipping in the strait has been nearly halted, leaving an estimated 2,000 tankers stranded. Global gasoline and energy prices have soared to record highs as a result.
