The Philippine House of Representatives is set to vote on a second impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte, daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte, on Monday. The move deepens the political rift between the Duterte clan and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
The charges against Duterte include two counts of constitutional violations and betrayal of public trust for misuse of confidential government funds, failure to disclose wealth, bribery, and death threats against Marcos, his wife Liza Araneta, and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
One of the most serious allegations involves private bank transactions flagged by the anti-money laundering agency totaling over $110 million. Congressman Terry Ridon stated that the scale of these transactions cannot be reasonably explained by lawful income or declared assets.
The House seeks a Senate conviction on all four articles, removal from office, and perpetual disqualification from holding any government position. The impeachment requires at least one-third of House votes to proceed to the Senate, a threshold already reached.
A previous impeachment motion against Duterte passed in 2025 with 215 votes out of 313, but was later voided by the Supreme Court on technical grounds. A two-thirds Senate majority is now needed for conviction.
Duterte and Marcos ran as a ticket in 2022, but their alliance collapsed, leading to the elder Duterte's arrest by the International Criminal Court and now the vice president's impeachment. Duterte has declared her intention to run for president in 2028.
