Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly reduced the number of vehicles in his official convoy, according to news agencies ANI and PTI. The move comes after Modi made a seven-point appeal to Indians on Sunday, urging them to adopt austerity measures such as using public transport and carpooling to conserve fuel amid global supply disruptions caused by the Middle East crisis.

The reported cuts were implemented during Modi's recent domestic visits to Gujarat and Assam, immediately after his speech in Hyderabad. PTI reported that Modi also asked for electric vehicles to be included in his convoy where possible, without purchasing new ones.

Critics had questioned the prime minister's austerity push, noting that he embarked on roadshows after telling Indians to save on petrol and diesel.

Following Modi's lead, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta directed a reduction in official vehicles used by herself, her cabinet, and other public representatives. In a post on X, she emphasized the importance of Modi's appeal and pledged to prioritize carpooling and public transport.

Home Minister Amit Shah's convoy has also been reportedly reduced, according to ANI.

Modi's seven-point initiative, themed 'Nation First, Duty Above Comfort,' urges citizens to avoid foreign travel and refrain from buying gold for a year to help save India's foreign exchange reserves. He also called for reduced use of cooking oil and chemical fertilizers.
