Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called on citizens to fairly assess the coalition government amid widespread public dissatisfaction. In an interview with Focus magazine, she stressed the need for patience and balance.
Merkel also commented on dealing with US President Donald Trump, advising to identify common ground while acting 'without fear.' 'Not trying especially hard to please him — at least I never had any illusions about that, even when things were going well — nor trying to be especially provocative: that was how I handled it,' she said.
The former chancellor warned against underestimating Trump: 'Anyone who has reached positions like these simply has an incredible amount of power. And that is why it must be taken very, very seriously.'
The government's approval ratings have steadily declined since taking office just over a year ago, with some polls showing over 80% dissatisfaction. Merkel wished the government success and urged citizens to appreciate its achievements.
She also called for greater tolerance of internal debates: 'Today, every debate is immediately described as infighting. Politicians must make clear that there is no solution-finding process that does not involve some kind of debate.'
Merkel advised current Chancellor Friedrich Merz to show 'a generous spirit' toward coalition partners, the center-left Social Democrats.
