Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen told US special envoy Jeff Landry that the island is not for sale. Landry, appointed by President Donald Trump to spearhead the purchase, met Nielsen and Foreign Minister Mute Egede in the capital Nuuk to discuss the territory's future.
Trump has threatened to take over the autonomous Danish territory, a NATO ally, possibly by military force, insisting it is vital to US security. The stance has sparked unrest within NATO, with many European members objecting to the threats.
Nielsen described the meeting as 'constructive' but said there was 'no sign that anything had changed' regarding the US position, according to AFP. 'The Greenlandic people are not for sale. Greenlandic self-determination is not something that can be negotiated,' he told Danish TV 2.
Foreign Minister Egede said a group of experts from the US, Greenland, and Denmark are trying to find a solution, calling their work 'promising'. Landry stated Trump told him to 'go over there and make as many friends as we can get'.
Trump has said control of Greenland is important for his Golden Dome defence system against nuclear attack, and has accused Denmark of failing to ensure the island's security against Russia or China.
