In the letter, Gabbard expressed deep gratitude to Trump for the trust placed in her and for the opportunity to lead the Office of the Director of National Intelligence for the past year and a half.

She cited her husband's recent diagnosis with a rare form of bone cancer as the reason for her resignation, stating that her family requires her full attention at this time.

The resignation comes as a surprise to the US intelligence community and marks another personnel change in the Trump administration. The position of Director of National Intelligence is now vacant.
