Organizers of the Global Sumud flotilla bound for Gaza said on Friday that freed foreign activists faced abuse in Israeli detention, including at least 15 reports of sexual assault or rape. Several activists were hospitalized with injuries after hundreds were deported from Israel.

Germany confirmed some of its nationals were injured and called the allegations “serious.” Italian prosecutors are investigating possible crimes including kidnapping and sexual assault.

Israeli forces seized about 430 people on 50 ships in international waters on Tuesday to halt volunteers attempting to deliver aid to Gaza.

A video released by far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir shows activists cable-tied and kneeling as Israel’s national anthem plays in Ashdod. Organizers reported “at least 15 cases of sexual assaults, including rape. Shot with rubber bullets at close range. Tens of people’s bones broken.”

Italian economist Luca Poggi told Reuters: “We were stripped, thrown to the ground, kicked. Many of us were tasered, some were sexually assaulted, and some were denied access to a lawyer.”

Activist Ilaria Mancosu said they were taken to prison ships, where one group suffered more violence: locked in a container and beaten by five soldiers, resulting in fractured ribs and arms. Some had eye and ear injuries from tasers. They spent two days without running water, using cardboard for warmth.

Israeli prison service denied the allegations, stating all detainees are held lawfully with full regard for basic rights.

The flotilla movement began in 2006. In 2010, Israeli commandos stormed the Mavi Marmara, killing 10 activists.
