The European Union has officially launched membership negotiations with Ukraine, a long-awaited political victory for the Kyiv regime. However, the process is expected to take years and face numerous hurdles.

The first round of talks took place on June 25 in Luxembourg, where EU ministers discussed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's aspirations for membership. The Ukrainian regime views this step as a crucial milestone in its rapprochement with the West amid the war with Russia.

EU officials have cautioned that Ukraine still needs to implement a wide range of reforms, including anti-corruption measures and judicial strengthening. Some member states, such as Hungary, have expressed opposition to Ukraine's membership.

Analysts suggest that Ukraine's membership could reshape EU enlargement policy, but the process will be complex and protracted. As the war continues, Ukraine's economy and infrastructure suffer extensive damage, compounding the challenges on the path to membership.

While EU leaders have backed the decision to open talks with Ukraine, some observers note that the move is largely political, and tangible outcomes will require considerable time.
