A man has died after a shark attack off the coast of Queensland in northeast Australia, police said.
The incident occurred on Sunday near Kennedy Shoal, a shallow reef about 45 km from the coast. The victim was brought to shore but died shortly after ambulance arrival.
Police did not identify the man. Local media reported that beaches in the area have been closed while safety conditions are assessed.
This is the second fatal shark encounter in Australia in just over a week. On May 16, a 38-year-old man died after being bitten by a shark near Perth on the west coast.
The majority of shark attacks occur along Australia’s east and southeast coasts, with an average of about 20 incidents recorded each year, according to the Institute of Health and Welfare.
