Ahmed al Ahmed, who disarmed one of the alleged perpetrators of the deadly Bondi Beach shooting, has been charged with assault. The incident occurred during a Hanukkah event in December, killing 15 people and injuring dozens.

The 44-year-old is accused of assaulting his father in March, as well as stalking and intimidation, according to Australian media. He has denied the allegations, telling ABC they were “not true at all.”

Footage showed Ahmed wrestling a gun from an alleged attacker, during which he was shot several times. He was later visited in hospital by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who called him “the best of our country.”

A fundraiser for Ahmed raised over A$2.5 million. He is due to appear in Sydney’s Bankstown Local Court on June 29.

The Bondi attack was Australia’s deadliest mass shooting since 1996. Police declared it a terrorist incident targeting the Jewish community.
