A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck the southern Philippines, killing three people and injuring four others, according to local authorities.
The quake damaged 37 buildings, including schools, hospitals, and residential homes, in the northern and central parts of Mindanao island. Power outages were reported in several areas.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered the suspension of classes in several areas of Mindanao. He directed government agencies to coordinate relief efforts, provide humanitarian aid, and ensure the operation of evacuation centers.
The epicenter was located approximately 58 kilometers from General Santos, a city of about 679,000 residents. At least eleven aftershocks, ranging from magnitude 4.8 to 6.5, were recorded within two hours of the main tremor.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology issued a tsunami warning for the Philippines, Indonesia, Palau, Taiwan, and Papua New Guinea. Waves could reach up to three meters in height.
