In the opening match of the World Cup in Mexico, the host nation defeated South Africa 2-0. Javier Aguirre's team started aggressively, with Julian Quiñones scoring in the 9th minute. Roberto Jiménez added a second goal in the 67th minute.
South Africa faced an uphill battle after defender Sithole was sent off in the 49th minute. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams made several saves but was partly at fault for the first goal.
In the second half, South Africa had another player sent off (Zwane, 84'), leaving them with nine men. Mexico's Montes also received a red card in stoppage time and will miss the next match.
In Group A's second game, South Korea came from behind to beat the Czech Republic 2-1. The Czechs took the lead through Ladislav Krejčí in the 59th minute, but Hwang In-beom equalized in the 67th. Oh Hyeon-gyu scored the winner in the 80th minute.
South Korea dominated possession and created numerous chances, but Czech goalkeeper Matej Kovář put in a strong performance. Tomáš Souček's goal was ruled out for offside.
