Veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer will start in goal for Germany in their first match of the 2026 World Cup against Curacao on Sunday, coach Julian Nagelsmann confirmed at a press conference.

The 40-year-old had retired from international football in August 2024 but reversed his decision after helping Bayern Munich win the Bundesliga and reach the Champions League semi-finals this season.

Neuer missed recent friendlies against Finland and the US due to a calf injury; Germany won both matches.

Nagelsmann emphasized the need for a perfect performance: "Curacao's players are well-trained and can play without pressure. That makes them dangerous. You never win just because you're favorites. We will only win if we produce a perfect performance."

The match takes place in Houston, Texas. Curacao is making its World Cup debut.
