Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday he does not always share the same views as US President Donald Trump, speaking at a press conference. 'I am responsible for Israel's security interests,' he stated.
The US and Iran reached an initial deal Sunday to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and extend a ceasefire, with a formal signing set for Friday in Switzerland. Netanyahu noted that details remain unclear: 'We still do not know what the agreement will look like.'
Netanyahu claimed Israel's military campaign against Iran prevented Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons in the near term and averted an existential threat. 'We saved the state of Israel from the threat of nuclear annihilation,' he said.
Trump has asserted the deal will ensure Iran does not develop nuclear weapons, but the text has not been released. Netanyahu vowed: 'With or without an agreement, Iran will not have nuclear weapons. As long as I am prime minister of Israel, that will not happen.'
Netanyahu added that Israel's campaign against Iran and its allies is not over, with forces remaining in 'security zones' in Gaza, southern Lebanon, and Syria. Israel continued strikes on Lebanon despite the ceasefire announcement.
