Uzbekistan national football team head coach Fabio Cannavaro stated at a press conference in Houston on June 22 that the team should not fear Portugal and will strive to play for a win in the second round of the World Cup. The Italian specialist acknowledged that the opponent is one of the strongest teams in the tournament.

When asked about facing Cristiano Ronaldo's team, Cannavaro emphasized that the discussion is not only about the Portuguese captain. He highlighted Portugal's strengths: powerful wingers, one of the best midfield lines in the world, and one of the greatest players in football history.

Commenting on the first-round match against Colombia, Cannavaro noted that Uzbekistan failed to press effectively across all lines. He promised to improve this aspect and play with high intensity, as modern football demands.

Cannavaro urged players to be more focused, recalling the three goals conceded against Colombia. He stressed that the team cannot afford lapses in concentration. The coaching staff is working on all details, including set pieces.

Captain Eldor Shomurodov said the team has already discussed the mistakes from the first match. He admitted that in the first half, players did not fully execute the coach's instructions, but ball control improved in the second half.

Cannavaro stated he prefers to focus on technical metrics such as pass complexity and game tempo rather than just physical stats. He praised Portugal's speed in moving the ball forward and emphasized the importance of quality play when losing possession.

The coach stressed that Uzbekistan is making its World Cup debut and has nothing to lose. The team will play without fear, attack, and use their chances rather than sit back in defense.

Shomurodov noted that the players are calmly preparing for the match and feel no pressure. He believes Portugal will have a harder time as they are expected to win. The captain said the team is focused on their own game and collecting points to advance from the group.

When asked about tactics for Portugal, Shomurodov declined to reveal plans but expressed confidence in achieving a good result. He also shared his emotions when the national anthem plays, calling it a unique motivation.

At the end of the press conference, Cannavaro commented on FIFA's decision to introduce mandatory three-minute water breaks. He noted that while it may disrupt the game, it is necessary in hot climates.

Uzbekistan is in Group K alongside Colombia, Portugal, and DR Congo. The next match against Portugal will take place on June 23 at 22:00.
