The Trump administration spent $14.7 million (€12.87 million) repainting the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington D.C. in "American flag blue" ahead of the nation's 250th anniversary celebrations next month. The no-bid contract was awarded to Virginia-based Atlantic Industrial Coatings.
Weeks after completion, the paint began peeling and algae turned the water green. Officials said the pool will be drained and re-renovated under warranty.
President Trump blamed unspecified "sick, deranged" people for vandalizing the pool, threatening a 10-year prison sentence for destruction or attempted destruction of such structures. He provided no evidence.
Trump also alleged a 290-to-300-foot "slit" through the pool, likely caused by a sharp object, but offered no proof.
Media reports indicate five people were arrested for vandalizing the pool and five others received federal citations. Among those arrested is a former Olympian who denies the charges.
