The Global Sumud Flotilla group announced on Wednesday that four pro-Palestinian activists detained in Libya for about a month have been released. The freed individuals include Achraf Khoja from Tunisia, Matias Rodriguez from Uruguay, and Italians Domenico Centrone and Leonarda Alberizia, all of whom have arrived in Tunis.

The organization stated that six other activists are expected to be released within the next 24 hours. Italy's Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani welcomed the news, confirming that the two Italians and Rodriguez, who also holds Italian citizenship, were handed over to Italy's consul in Benghazi and will return to Italy on Wednesday.

Over 400 activists were arrested last month in international waters aboard dozens of vessels heading to Gaza to break Israel's siege. The activists held in Libya were part of a separate group attempting to reach the strip by land. They had staged a hunger strike to protest their detention.

According to Amnesty International, on May 24, 2026, an armed group affiliated with Khalifa Haftar's Libyan Arab Armed Forces arrested 10 humanitarian activists from eight countries as they were en route to Sirte to negotiate the convoy's passage. After periods of enforced disappearance ranging from two to nine days, prosecutors interrogated them and ordered pretrial detention on charges of 'unauthorized assembly'.
