A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Venezuela on Wednesday afternoon, according to the United States Geological Survey. The epicenter was located about 17 miles (28 km) west of the town of Moron on the Caribbean coast, at a depth of 13 kilometers.

The USGS later reported a second, stronger earthquake measuring 7.5 magnitude, with a depth of 10 kilometers, centered 16 kilometers southwest of Moron.

Reports of tremors came from Caracas, where residents evacuated swaying buildings. The quake was also felt in neighboring Colombia.

The US Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami warning for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, but the warning was later canceled. Several aftershocks followed the main tremors.
