Turkey claimed their first win of the 2026 World Cup with a dramatic 3-2 victory over co-hosts United States in a dead-rubber Group D clash at Los Angeles Stadium. The result, secured by Kaan Ayhan's stoppage-time strike, gave the Americans their first defeat of the tournament.
The US, already assured of top spot in the group, made nine changes to their starting lineup, resting key players ahead of their round-of-32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Turkey, eliminated after losses to Paraguay and Australia, sought to restore pride.
The hosts took an early lead through Auston Trusty's close-range finish from a corner. However, Turkey responded swiftly: Arda Guler equalized in the 10th minute after a clever dummy and cross from Baris Alper Yilmaz.
Turkey went ahead in the 31st minute when Eren Elmali's cutback found Yilmaz, who slotted home. The US equalized early in the second half through Sebastian Berhalter's low drive from distance.
Christian Pulisic, returning from injury, entered as a substitute and nearly scored, hitting the post. But deep into stoppage time, Ayhan pounced on a loose ball to fire home, sparking wild Turkish celebrations.
Despite the loss, the US remain group winners and face Bosnia next. Coach Mauricio Pochettino will hope the defeat serves as a wake-up call for the knockout stages.
