An Alaska judge ruled that incumbent US Senator Dan Sullivan and his namesake challenger, former Forest Service worker Dan Sullivan, can both appear on the August 18 primary ballot.

“Mr. Dan Sullivan is declared to be an eligible candidate,” Superior Court Judge Thomas Matthews said, reversing an earlier decision by the state elections director.

Republican officials argued that two Dan Sullivans on the ballot could confuse voters. Senator Sullivan also alleged the challenger was recruited by Democrats to boost candidate Mary Peltola.

A Peltola spokesperson denied any involvement. Republicans are expected to appeal to the state Supreme Court.

Alaska uses a nonpartisan primary system where all candidates appear on one ballot, with the top four advancing to the general election.
