A Jordanian rescue team has pulled a three-year-old boy alive from the rubble six days after devastating earthquakes struck Venezuela. Video footage shows rescuers cheering as the child, identified as Klieber Morán, was extracted from wreckage in La Guaira state.
Delcy Rodríguez described the rescue as a moment of hope. The United Nations warned that tens of thousands of people urgently need food and shelter. The death toll from last week's quakes (magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5) has risen to 1,943, with over 10,000 injured.
NASA satellite data indicates 58,870 buildings were likely damaged or destroyed. The Jordanian civil defense said Klieber received first aid, was taken to hospital, and his vital signs are good.
The UN refugee agency reported widespread food shortages, broken basic services, and severed communications in La Guaira, with rising community tensions. The WHO warned of increased risk of vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks.
International rescue teams from the US, Mexico, and dozens of other countries continue searching with dogs and heavy equipment. A 47-tonne UN humanitarian aid shipment arrived on Tuesday.
