Belgium kept their World Cup hopes alive with a dramatic 3-2 extra-time victory over Senegal in the round of 32 in Seattle, coming from two goals down to snatch victory through a 125th-minute penalty by Youri Tielemans.
The penalty was awarded after a VAR review when Senegal's Lamine Camara slid in on Tielemans as the ball flashed across the face of goal. The Belgian midfielder coolly slotted the ball into the top corner to complete an extraordinary comeback.
Senegal had taken a deserved 2-0 lead through Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr, and looked set to cruise into the next round. However, Belgium scored twice in the final four minutes of regulation time through Romelu Lukaku and Tielemans to force extra time.
Belgium will now face the winner of Wednesday's last-32 clash between co-hosts United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the next round in Seattle on Monday.
It was a cruel defeat for Senegal, who controlled much of the 90 minutes and hit the woodwork twice but could not see out the game. They became the fourth African side to exit in the round of 32 after South Africa, Ivory Coast, and DR Congo.
