Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the start of a two-day visit to Jakarta, with both sides expected to sign multiple agreements to deepen defense and strategic ties.
An Indian government official announced that India will supply its BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system and Astra air-to-air missiles to Indonesia. The announcement came as Modi held talks with Subianto.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono said ahead of Modi's visit that eight agreements and several memorandums of understanding are expected to be announced. Modi will address Indonesia's Parliament and attend an evening event with the Indian community.
Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Sandeep Chakravorty stated that closer ties between two leaders of the Global South are essential for mutual growth. Last month, India signed a BrahMos missile deal with Vietnam.
Modi, on his second visit to Indonesia as prime minister and first since 2018, arrived in Jakarta on the first leg of a regional tour that will also take him to Australia and New Zealand. Meanwhile, two Indian soldiers were killed in an ambush by militants in Manipur.
