Two explosions occurred on Tuesday morning in Damascus near the hotel where French President Emmanuel Macron was staying during his official visit, Podrobno.uz reports.
The Elysee Palace stated that the French leader is completely safe and continues his scheduled program.
According to Reuters, citing security sources, two explosive devices detonated near the Four Seasons hotel in central Damascus, where Macron spent the night.
One bomb was placed in a trash bin, the other in a parked car. The blast shattered windows in the Ministry of Tourism building opposite the hotel. The area was quickly cordoned off, and ambulances arrived at the scene. Macron had already left the hotel for morning events.
After the incident, the French delegation safely arrived at the Syrian leader's residence, where expanded talks began with leaders and ministry officials from both countries.
Macron's visit is the first by a head of state from the European Union and Western powers to Syria since the change of power. In 2024, a coalition led by Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former Al-Qaeda commander, overthrew Bashar al-Assad.
The new Syrian leadership has declared a course toward normalizing relations with Western and Middle Eastern countries.
