After US President Donald Trump declared the ceasefire 'over,' social media users began circulating videos purporting to show new attacks by Iran.
One video, viewed over 288,000 times on X, claimed to show a 'highly classified' US facility ablaze after a retaliatory strike by Iran. However, DW fact-checking found this claim to be false.
The video actually shows a fire at a market in St. Petersburg, Russia, that occurred in December. It depicts large plumes of smoke from a burning building, firefighters, and crowds, with streets filled with cars and high-rise buildings in the background.
A reverse image search revealed that the same video circulated in May with false claims about the Iran war. It has also been falsely shared as an attack on Dubai, a US attack on Kuwait, and a Hezbollah attack on a secret base in Israel.
The video was posted across platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube in multiple languages including Arabic, Turkish, Indonesian, and Spanish. Visual cues such as the round structure over the entrance and triangular shapes under the main roof match other videos of the same December incident.
Therefore, the claim of an Iranian attack on a US facility is baseless, and the video depicts an entirely different event.
