Nigel Farage, leader of the right-wing Reform UK party, announced his resignation as MP for Clacton this week, only to stand again in the same constituency. The move triggered a by-election, which critics have slammed as a stunt to delay a parliamentary inquiry into a funding scandal.

All major parties have refused to field candidates, leaving Farage to run unopposed — until now. Satirical figure Count Binface (comedian Jon Harvey), known for his rubbish-bin-shaped helmet and absurd promises, has entered the race.

Count Binface has stood in multiple elections since 2019, including against Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak. His main appeal: "I'm not Nigel Farage." In the 2021 London mayoral election, he received over 24,000 votes, finishing ninth.

His platform includes abolishing the House of Lords, renaming London Bridge, and capping the price of a 99 Flake ice cream at 99 pence. He also promises to "build at least one affordable house" in Clacton.

Finance Minister Rachel Reeves called the by-election a "farce and a desperate distraction" but said she would not obstruct it. "The people of Clacton deserve better," she posted on X. "But if he [Farage] wants to spend the summer arguing with a bin, I won't stop him."

A Binface victory would be a historic upset. Acknowledging the unlikelihood, he told the BBC he aims to "celebrate and defend the wonders of British democracy."
