Kylian Mbappe has carried on his merry scoring way in the World Cup, netting a goal for France in their deserved quarterfinal 2-0 win against Morocco in Boston. The French captain failed to convert a penalty early in the game, but his second-half strike tied him with Lionel Messi for the most non-penalty goals at the tournament.

Like his Argentinian counterpart, Mbappe has broken or equalled several records at this World Cup. The 27-year-old surpassed Olivier Giroud to become France's all-time top scorer after his goal against Senegal in France's tournament opener. The Real Madrid forward now stands alone on 64 goals for the French national side, with Giroud on 57.

Thierry Henry is third on the list with 51 goals, while Antoine Griezmann is fourth with 44 goals. Unsurprisingly, Mbappe is also the top World Cup scorer for France. His strike against Senegal was his 14th World Cup goal, surpassing Just Fontaine's record of 13 goals. He has since scored six more goals to extend his lead.

Mbappe's goal against Morocco ensured he is now level with Messi in non-penalty World Cup goals, both with 17. His overall World Cup goal tally reached 20, just one behind Messi. His first goal against Sweden made him the leading scorer in World Cup knockout matches, surpassing Brazilian greats Leonidas and Ronaldo. He now tops the knockout list with 12 goals.

Mbappe's assist for Ousmane Dembele's goal against Morocco broke another record, as he became the first player to register 11 direct goal contributions in two different World Cups. He achieved double figures at the 2022 Qatar World Cup with eight goals and two assists. Mbappe is now the joint record holder for the most appearances for France at World Cup finals, with 20 appearances, tying Hugo Lloris, and is the youngest to reach that milestone.
